Mesopotamian Art – Proceedings from the Lecture Series

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is now publishing the proceedings of the Arte da Mesopotâmia (Art of Mesopotamia) conference, which took place on 24 and 25 May 2013. This conference was attended by and featured contributions from many different experts in this field, from both Portugal and abroad, including Julian Read, David Kertai, Dominique Collon, Tiago de Brito Penedo and José Augusto Ramos. These researchers will have their texts published in their native languages and enhanced with illustrations, in some cases with their own drawings and photographs.

António de Freitas, a lecturer and specialist in Assyrian art, organised the conference and edited the book, and is to thank for both projects, which are hugely important for raising awareness of Assyrian art in general, and for encouraging in-depth study of the small repository of Mesopotamian art in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection in particular. This publication also features a map of the Middle East on the inside back cover.
