Line and Colour. Drawings and Watercolours in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection

Line and Colour. Drawings and Watercolours in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection is the first exhibition to be exclusively devoted to the collection of drawings and watercolours acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian between 1905 and 1937. For reasons of conservation these works have rarely been exhibited, especially after the damage caused by the floods of 1967, making this a unique opportunity to learn more about the collector’s artistic sensibility and the relationship that he established with the art of drawing. His interest also extended to purchasing printed books embellished with original drawings and watercolours that form part of his magnificent library, some of which are included in this exhibition. This route, which complements the exhibition, takes visitors through various groups of works produced between the 16th and 20th centuries, giving them the opportunity to enjoy pieces by Dürer, Watteau, Fragonard and Turner, among others.
