Al Cartio and Constance Ruth Howes from A to C

Al Cartio (Honolulu, 1951) and Constance Ruth Howes (Baltimore, 1949) presented a selection of works for the Project Space – Modern Collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in which language is used as a locus of experimentation and critical discussion, together with a series of watercolour seascapes inspired by the coastal areas of the Algarve. The dialogue established between these works reveals surprising links between the artists’ ways of seeing and considering reality.

An early sculpture from 1981 by Al Cartio, exit C, and a watercolour by the artist João Marques, untitled (1912), acquired by Howes during her sojourn in Portugal in 2015, are also included.

On the occasion of this project, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum published a booklet which included a text by curators Ana Jotta and Ricardo Valentim reflecting on artistic authorship and the curation of exhibitions. It also includes photographs of the exhibited works and the biographies of the artists. This bilingual edition is published as part of the editorial line of the Project Space.
