Meeting Point 2 – Fantin-Latour | Manuel Botelho
Meeting Point is an initiative by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, aimed at creating a dialogue, or even provoking a confrontation, between its collection and that of the Modern Art Centre. Still lifes are a key theme in this second encounter, which features the painting Still Life or La Table Garnie by Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904) and two photographs, 100.rç-cmb and 101.rç-cmb, from the series Ração de Combate by Manuel Botelho (1950). In the text that accompanies the second encounter in this series of events, Raquel Henriques da Silva, the guest curator, extends this unexpected juxtaposition to another work by Manuel Botelho: 211.parad from the Parada series.
This publication also contains an essay by Helena de Freitas, who curated the initiative, and a piece by the curator of Paintings Luísa Sampaio, which represents an important contribution to research and knowledge about the pictorial work of Henri Fantin-Latour, a 19th-century painter who has a significant presence in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection. As with the first Meeting Point, this encounter is also complemented by biographical information about the featured artists.
