Dionysus

Dionysus is depicted on many coins in the Gulbenkian Collection: half-naked and mounted on a donkey, with a jug of wine in his hand, a type that has vine leaves and bunches of grapes on the reverse, symbolizing his world; mounted on a panther and holding the thyrsus; or even his head in profile, bearded and laurelled with a crown of luxuriant ivy, or a crown of ivy and flowers that overflow onto his head on the reverse, a type of coin minted in Thebes (Boiotia) that reveals the typical local shield on the obverse.
