Illuminations
This word/concept was used by Fernando Pernes, in a 1965 critique in Colóquio journal, to describe the artistic production and research begun by José Escada in Paris in 1963. This critique looked at small graphite and gouache works on paper centred around the figure and the visual properties of the painting surface, alluding to the central role of light, not only as means of transforming the space but also as a mystic element. This use of light transforms the painting space into organic and inconstant (‘playful and kinetic’) matter, qualities that extend to the forms/figures, which appear to be in a constant movement of transfiguration.
