Roundtable

Reassessing Islamic Art: past, present and future takes as its point of departure the exhibition, The Rise of Islamic Art, 1869–1939, to look at historical collecting, exhibitions and the development of the field of ‘Islamic Art’. It brings together the authors of the catalogue to share their perspectives on the current show, and to reflect upon the distance travelled and directions where the field is moving next.

This roundtable follows previous discussions on «Islamic Art in the Museum Today: Controversy? or Opportunity?» held in 2016 and 2017.

Moderator: Jessica Hallett, curator of the exhibition

Invited participants: professors Mustafa Aksakal (Georgetown University), Nebahat Avcıoğlu (Hunter College, CUNY), Avinoam Shalem (Columbia University) and Eva-Maria Troelenberg (Utrecht University).
