Nevarte Essayan: memories in the Gulbenkian Collection

Tour guided by the curator

What is it like to live with an art collection on a daily basis?

The 150th anniversary of the birth of Nevarte Adèle Essayan Gulbenkian represents an ideal time to reflect on how her life intersected and intertwined with the collection assembled by her husband, Calouste Gulbenkian.

Revealing a more private side of the Gulbenkian family, Vera Mariz, curator of research at the Museum explores new aspects and forgotten memories on this visit: from wearing Lalique’s jewellery and the use of fur coats and Persian rugs, to contradictory feelings towards eighteenth-century French furniture and Nevarte’s role in protecting the collection during wartime.
