Modernism in English and Portuguese Literature
Talks about British Art
Discussing the exhibition 'British Art – Vanishing Point', the President of the Board of Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Professor António M. Feijó, explains, at this conference, how the avant-garde movement operated in its various dimensions.
Feijó starts by reflecting on the publications ORPHEU and BLAST and how those manifestos coincided chronologically. Within two different geographies, Lisbon and the British art scene, the figures of Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) and William Morris (1834–1896) emerge prominently as active agents of the avant-garde movement.
The aim of this conference was to advance the discussion of modernism in English and Portuguese literature along two lines: first, the time in which the works were written and published, and second, their coexistence within political, social and cultural spheres.
