Black Gaze – Showcase of Black Cinema in Portugal

Film cycle / 08, 09, 15 and 16 Nov

This showcase aims to highlight Black Cinema made in Portugal and to contribute to public debate around these films and filmmakers, and the many questions they raise.

The group of works presented here is highly diverse in terms of genre, duration and the themes approached: ‘In-between places’, ‘Memory and Ancestry’, ‘Ecology and Feminism’, and ‘Anti-racism – family and neighbourhood’. Some screenings will be attended by filmmakers who will discuss their works with the audience. The selection includes works by Denise Fernandes, Fábio Silva, Falcão Nhaga, Lolo Arziki, Melissa Rodrigues, Mónica de Miranda, Pocas Pascoal, Raquel Lima, Silas Tiny, Vanessa Fernandes and Welket Bungué.

The title of the series, curated by Kitty Furtado, stems from the idea that to gaze is not the same as to look – it implies an asymmetrical power relation between the one who looks and the one who is the object of that gaze.

It is possible to purchase a daily pass or a general pass, in addition to individual tickets per screening.
