‘Hanami’ (2024), by Denise Fernandes, is set on the island of Fogo, in Cape Verde (filmed in São Filipe and Chã das Caldeiras) and tells the story of Nana, who was raised in Cape Verde by wise old women.
The beauty of the faces, the settings and the comfort provided by the music do not diminish the pain the film portrays. ‘Hanami’ tackles themes of abandonment, belonging and identity. The island is – along with Nana – a central character in the film, which explores its aridity, its dark soil, its uneven geography, the wind and the sea surrounding and enveloping everything. Denise Fernandes’ lens favours serenity and empathy, avoiding simplistic moralising when it comes to approaching emotional wounds.
