The Delli programme and the Delli Press project

Delli, the undergraduate programme in Communication Design and the master’s in Design at Universidade Lusófona, along with the editorial practice developed through Delli Press, represent a combination of teaching, practical experience, and critical thinking in design.

The purpose of Delli

In the courses at Universidade Lusófona, both the BA in Communication Design and the MA in Design, there is a continuous progression in the teaching-learning model. This progression occurs through practical experimentation, exchange between students and teachers and links with the communities in which design is inserted.

Design, as a field of study, is increasingly aligned with concerns about the future of contemporary societies. At Delli, especially through Delli Press, the aim is to encourage the dissemination of students’ learning, creations and projections into the public space. The intention is to turn these processes into dialogues, sharing reflections on the present and on possible directions for the future of the discipline.

Delli Press. Publishing as a pedagogical tool

Delli Press is a distinctive publishing label. Although it is part of the academic context of Universidade Lusófona, it operates independently, promoting experimental and collaborative publications. Its main objective is to promote reflection, experimentation and creation through editorial production, and the strategy of its editorial practice includes the participation of students, teachers and external guests, many of them specialists who develop thematic workshops and events.

The publications are innovative and experimental, exploring relevant themes, always seeking to challenge the boundaries of traditional learning, with the ability to establish connections with communities outside the academic space, stimulating debates, exchanges of experiences and even the critical scrutiny of concepts and approaches.

Each one is a collaborative effort, resulting from a living pedagogical experience that materializes the teaching-learning processes, playing a crucial role at the intersection between teaching, learning and creative practice. Publications are not only record experiences, but also highlight the students and their trajectories, allowing them to assume authorship as a space for personal and academic development.

Archiving memories and creating points of dialogue

As well as being pedagogical tools, Delli Press publications operate as future memories, documenting the experiences and reflections of the academic and professional communities involved.

The publications are presented at specialized events, such as artist’s book fairs, both in Portugal and abroad, contributing to the expansion of these dialogues and access to a wide network of thinkers, artists, researchers and institutions that intersect with Delli Press.

In addition, they are available in libraries and private collections, allowing their themes and processes to be discussed in a transversal and interdisciplinary way.

The value of the collaborative process

Delli and Delli Press have collaboration as one of their main driving forces, involving teachers, guest experts and students who share experiences, practices and knowledge.

Collaborative nature guarantees not only a diversity of perspectives, but also a learning environment that transcends the walls of the traditional classroom. Thus, these publications explore multiple visual, reflective and creative forms, culminating in a collection of publications that are, in themselves, a metaphor for the practice of publishing.

The impact and the future

The results of the Delli project and Delli Press have a significant impact: they offer continuous stimuli for learning, promote critical reflection and explore new approaches and models for design practice in various contexts. They prove that the process of creation and the act of reflecting through making can be powerful tools for tackling the changes and challenges of contemporary society.

Delli aims to go beyond academia: it is a project that connects with the social, cultural and technological dynamics of today. It is a practice that aims to build educational experiences through creation, experimentation and reflection, leading students to have an image of themselves as critical and creative authors in a constantly changing world.

The Delli programme and the Delli Press project

Delli and its publishing practice through Delli Press represent a combination of teaching, practice and critical thinking in design. They reflect not only changes in the discipline’s methodology and pedagogical models, but also the idea that design should turn towards future projections and dialogue with changing communities.

Through its publications and collaborative process, Delli is building a legacy of reflection, innovation and exploration, reminding us that design is not just an aesthetic or functional practice, but a constant invitation to experiment, question, learn and transform the world through creation.
