Irene Buarque in the Art Library collection
Irene Buarque was born in São Paulo (1943) but has lived and worked in Lisbon since 1973.
Visual artist – with works in painting, sculpture, installation, photography, ceramics, engraving, artist books and public art – she has exhibited regularly since the late 1960s, individually and collectively, in Portugal and abroad.
Between 1973 and 1975 she was a grantee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. And, in two different periods, she was a member of the board of Cooperativa Diferença, in Lisbon: 1979-1993 and 2002-2008.
Her work is represented in public collections. In Portugal, at the Centre of Modern Art of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and at the Carmona e Costa Foundation; in Spain, at the Municipal Museum of Ourense and at the Vostell Museum; in Brazil, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo, at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo and at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
In the Art Library collection, Irene Buarque is represented individually by works that reveal her interest in windows and the floor.

“After years of looking at the windows, I started to look at the ground, to register the floors on which my feet walked, because we carry in our feet the paths on which we walk. That is why it is necessary to look where you walk, because it is possible to always find something that we can take or have a good visual sensation… a leaf, a stone, a drawing or even a lost object.”

Artist’s books
Not really a book, not really a work of art. Portuguese artists of various generations present these varied and unexpected objects, which are part of the Art Library collection.
