The world of Robert C. Smith (1912-1975), which will take place on November 14 and 15 2022 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and, on November 16, at the National Palace of Queluz.

In the year in which the 110th anniversary of the birth of the North American art historian is celebrated, this scientific meeting will have as its central theme the figure and work of Robert C. Smith (1912-1975), a graduate of Harvard, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and main researcher and promoter of the Portuguese-Brazilian Baroque artistic heritage, between the 40s and 70s of the 20th century.

Robert Chester Smith’s relationship with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was materialized through the several grants given to him for researching and publishing his works. Currently, the Art Library and Archives is responsible for the conservation, access, valorization and promotion of the documentary collection of Robert Smith, bequeathed in his will to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1975.
