Smith (1912-1975), a graduate of Harvard, professor at the University of Pennsylvania and main researcher and promoter of the Portuguese-Brazilian Baroque artistic heritage, between the 40s and 70s of the 20th century.

Robert Chester Smith’s relationship with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was materialized through the several grants given to him for researching and publishing his works. Currently, the Art Library and Archives is responsible for the conservation, access, valorization and promotion of the documentary collection of Robert Smith, bequeathed in his will to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1975.
