Photos with history

Many memories can arise when viewing these photographs from the studios of Mário and Horácio Novais who recorded the daily life, the architecture and works for advertising.

The Brothers Mário and Horácio Novais

Mário (1899-1967) and Horácio Novais (1910-1988) belonged to a family of photographers – sons of Júlio Novais (1867-1925), nephews of António and Eduardo Novais – and worked together in the years 1925 to 1927.

Mário Novais started his professional activity as a portrait artist in the 1920s, at ‘Fotografia Vasquez’, and in 1933 he set up his own studio – Estudio Novaes – in Lisbon. In addition to photography of works of art and architecture, in which he specialized, he also practiced photo reporting, advertising and commercial and industrial photography.

Horácio Novais worked until 1931 as a photo reporter for the newspaper ‘O Século’ and that same year he founded his studio in Lisbon, at Rua da Horta Seca n. 7, starting to work as an independent photographer.
