Santos Simões collection
This collection is the result of the work carried out by Santos Simões at the Fine Arts Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation between 1957 and 1971.
The Santos Simões collection consists of textual documents, photographic documents and graphic documents, the work carried out by Santos Simões in conjunction with the Brigada de Estudos de Azulejaria (1960-1969).
The Brigada consisted of Santos Simões, the painter Emílio Guerra de Oliveira and the administrative Maria Isabel R. Marques. Together they carried out an inventory of Portuguese tiles from the 15th to 20th centuries in mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, and Brazil. This inventory will result in the publication, by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, of Corpus da Azulejaria Portuguesa.
In parallel, Santos Simões writes thematic texts that remained unpublished until 2015 and makes communications on azulejo between 1946 and 1968 in Lisbon.
The Collection is organised into three categories: drawings (catalogue of the tile patterns and the set of illustrations from the Corpus da Azulejaria), photographic species (slides, negatives, proofs) and manuscript documents (texts, indexes, inventory sheets, press cuttings).
