René BertholoArtists' collections and archives
A member of the KWY group, René Bertholo is one of the most important artists in Portugal in the second half of the 20th century. His archive brings together a diverse set of documents produced by the artist between his childhood and the year of his death.
It includes correspondence with entities, institutions, friends and contemporary artists, such as his colleagues in the KWY group or the Argentinian Alberto Greco, photographs, press cuttings, ephemera, posters, books, magazines and exhibition catalogues, as well as photographs, negatives and reels.
This archive, which reflects René Bertholo’s artistic and personal career, was donated to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2023 by Ann-Katrin Schaffner, heiress of René Bertholo and his wife, Elna Voss-Hellwig.
It consists of books, magazines, photographs, some of which relate to his stays in France and Germany with Lourdes Castro, films, vinyl discs, institutional and personal correspondence, artistic projects – including sketches and technical drawings – press cuttings, artist’s books, posters, a small viewing machine for film media and stamps. There is also a set of documents dedicated exclusively to his Makina project, and some documents from his father, the painter Augusto Bertholo.
All the documentation has been processed and is available for consultation.
