Conversation with Nobel Laureate Dr. Ardem Patapoutian

03 jun 2025

Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Ardem Patapoutian was hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation on 19 May 2025 for a special public event. The conversation, moderated by Portuguese science communicator Sara Sá, offered the audience a unique opportunity to learn about Dr. Patapoutian’s personal and academic journey, from Beirut to California, and the scientific breakthroughs that earned him the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Dr. Patapoutian, an Armenian-American born in Lebanon, and now a leading international researcher based in California, first connected to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as a student in 1985, receiving a scholarship from the Armenian Communities Department, which allowed him to begin his university studies at the American University of Beirut. That first step, supported by a handwritten scholarship application, marked the beginning of a journey that would span continents and reshape our understanding of the human sensory system.

Ardem Patapoutian spoke candidly about his life story, approach to scientific research, and the challenges of displacement and reinvention. From his early years attending an Armenian community school in Lebanon, through the disruption of civil war, to his academic path in the United States at UCLA and Caltech, his story is one of resilience, curiosity and enduring community connections.

His Nobel-winning research focuses on the biological receptors that sense temperature and touch. These discoveries have wide-reaching implications for neuroscience and medicine, shedding light on how our bodies interact with the physical world. Dr. Patapoutian is currently a neuroscience professor at Scripps Research and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, both globally renowned bioscience research centres.

In addition to his public engagement, Dr. Patapoutian met with Professor António Feijó, the President of the Foundation, and other members of the Board of Trustees. He visited Gulbenkian Museum exhibitions and the Modern Art Centre. A special meeting was arranged with current scholarship holders in the sciences, and with some members of the Armenian community in Portugal, offering moments of reflection and shared inspiration. Ardem Patapoutian represents a powerful example of the Armenian diasporan experience: the grandson of Genocide survivors, navigating identity and upheaval across borders, and contributing at the highest level to global knowledge.

These private and public events were a celebration not only of scientific and academic excellence but also, more broadly, of the long-term impact of higher education and opportunity. Dr. Patapoutian is one of two Nobel Laureates who have been supported by the Armenian Communities Department through scholarships in the 1980s.

The Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation continues to give higher education scholarships, helping thousands of students and researchers realize their potential. Every year, the Department grants up to one million Euros in scholarships, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Ardem Patapoutian visited Lisbon with the joint invitation of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Champalimaud Foundation, where he spoke on 20 May, explaining his findings and their relevance to the medical world in greater detail.
