The St. Matthew Passion was first performed in Leipzig in 1727, but then there was a long hiatus, and it was not heard again until the composer and conductor Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy revived it in 1829. Since then, it has definitively established itself as a true monument, never ceasing to be performed, heard and admired as one of the most extraordinary sacred works by the German master. The responsibility for bringing out the intensity of the story of Christ’s suffering, as well as the grandeur of Bach’s music, is again in the hands of German conductor Andreas Spering.
