While being one of Mozart’s most famous pieces, Rondo alla turca is actually the third and final movement of the Austrian composer’s Piano Sonata No. 11. However, it is said to have acquired “a life of its own” to the point of gaining a quite independent popularity. Written in 1783, the movement was inspired by Turkish military marches, at a time when Ottoman culture was very important in Europe. The melodic and rhythmic magnetism of Rondo alla turca are exceptional, as is its ironic and humorous side, elements that are often found in many of Mozart’s works, whether they be symphonies, concertos or operas.
