In 1840, inspired by poems and a novel by the writer Joseph von Eichendorff, a key figure in German Romantic literature, Robert Schumann composed a cycle of twelve songs which he named Liederkreis (op. 39). In a letter to his wife, Clara Schumann, the composer said this was “my most romantic music ever, with much of you in it, dear Clara”. The serenity of a nocturnal, mysterious, dreamy atmosphere has earned Liederkreis the just reputation for being one of the most beautiful song cycles of the 19th century, but also an archetype of this type of composition.
