Maxim Emelyanychev

Harpsichord / Conductor

Maxim Emelyanychev studied conducting and piano in Nizhny Novgorod and at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He made his conducting debut at the age of 12, and now works regularly with major baroque and symphonic orchestras in Russia and internationally. He is Principal Conductor of Il Pomo d’Oro Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Nizhny-Novgorod Youth Symphony Orchestra. At the start of the 2019/20 Season he became Principal Conductor of Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has also worked with orchestras including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre Sinfonica di Milano La Verdi, St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. His opera appearances include Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Zürich Opera), Rinaldo (Glyndebourne Festival) and European concert tours with Il Pomo d’Oro of Handel’s Serse, Agrippina, Rodelinda and Tamerlano.

Emelyanychev’s awards include Russia’s Golden Mask theatre prize for his work as a fortepianist in Le nozze di Figaro (Perm and recording for Sony, conducted by Theodor Currentzis). In 2019 he was awarded the Newcomer Award at the International Opera Awards. His recordings include a Gramophone Award-winning disc with Joyce DiDonato, an award-winning disc of Mozart piano sonatas and a recording of Beethoven and Brahms works with the Nizhny Novgorod Soloists Chamber Orchestra.
