Gareth Jones

Conductor

As a member of the music staff at Welsh National Opera from 1990 to 2008, Gareth Jones has conducted an extensive range of Italian, French, Czech, Russian and German operatic repertoire. As a freelance conductor, he has conducted at the Bregenz and Brisbane Festivals, Vancouver Opera, English National Opera and Cape Town Opera.

He was founder Musical Director and is Principal Conductor of Sinfonia Cymru, Wales’ premier chamber orchestra.

His concert engagements include performances with the Hallé, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Ulster Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Gareth has conducted over seventy concerts worldwide with Sir Bryn Terfel and has worked with him on numerous projects including Bryn’s gold disc recording ‘We’ll Keep a Welcome’, Opera Galas at the Faenol, Henley and Hampton Court Festivals, BBC Proms, a Gala Concert with the Orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera and a concert tour of Scandinavia of an all-Wagner programme with orchestras including the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic. Gareth was conductor at Sir Bryn’s Faenol Festival where he worked with international singers such as Andrea Bocelli, Angela Gheorghiu, Rolando Villazon, Renée Fleming, Carlos Alvarez, Simon Keenlyside and Diana Damrau.

Recent engagements include Sir Bryn Terfel’s 50th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall with Sinfonia Cymru and a semi-staged concert performance of Tosca at the Wales Millennium Centre with the Orchestra and Chorus of Welsh National Opera, the final of the 2016 Welsh Singers Competition with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and a classical gala concert at the 70th Llangollen International Musical Festival with Sir Bryn Terfel and Joseph Calleja.

In the 2016/17 Season, he joined Welsh National Opera’s production of Kiss Me Kate and English National Opera’s production of The Pirates of Penzance and conducted a semi-staged concert performance of Tosca at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod with Sir Bryn Terfel, Kristine Opolais and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera.

Forthcoming engagements include Un Ballo in Maschera with Welsh National Opera.
