Today’s Uzbekistan lies at the heart of Asia and has a long history of exchange between cultures and peoples. The art of erudite music expresses the multiple influences that have forged the country. Singer Yulduz Turdieva grew up in the musical milieu of Bukhara where as a child she sang at local festivals. But her vocal talents allowed her to tackle a broader repertoire that extended from Uzbeki traditions to Persian and Turkish music, being considered a true diva today. The folk dance group Bakhor, founded in Tashkent in 1957, has preserved and developed folk dance over the decades, incorporating all of the regional styles into its repertoire and regularly accompanying major singers.
