In the season of 2022/2023, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) celebrates its 25th birthday.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1997 based on the shared vision of being a free and international ensemble, dedicated to creating and sharing exceptional experiences in classical music. With 45 members spanning 20 different countries at its core, the MCO works as a nomadic collective of passionate musicians uniting for specific tours in Europe and across the world.
The orchestra is constantly on the move in search of the next musical horizon. It has, to date, performed in over 40 countries across five continents. It is governed collectively by its management team and orchestra board; decisions are made democratically with the participation of all musicians.
The MCO’s sound is characterized by the chamber music style of ensemble playing among its alert and independent musical personalities. Its core repertoire, ranging from the Viennese classical and early Romantic periods to contemporary works and world premieres, reflects the MCO’s agility in crossing musical boundaries.
The orchestra received its most significant artistic impulses from its founding mentor, Claudio Abbado, and from Conductor Laureate Daniel Harding. The MCO works closely with a network of Artistic Partners who inspire and shape the orchestra in long-term collaborations. Current MCO Artistic Partners include pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Leif Ove Andsnes, as well as violinist Pekka Kuusisto. Concertmaster Matthew Truscott leads and directs the orchestra regularly in chamber orchestra repertoire, while the MCO’s longstanding collaboration with Artistic Advisor Daniele Gatti focuses on larger symphonic works.
MCO musicians all share a strong desire to continually deepen their engagement with audiences. This has inspired a growing number of offstage musical encounters and projects that bring music, learning and creativity to communities across the globe. Unboxing Mozart creates a convergence of classical music, collaborative performance and urban gaming by inviting audiences to participate in the artistic process through sound boxes. Since 2012, Feel the Music has opened the world of music to deaf and hard of hearing children through interactive workshops in schools and concert halls. MCO musicians are equally committed to sharing their passion and expertise with the next generation of musicians: since 2009, they have, through the MCO Academy, worked with young musicians to provide them with a high quality orchestral experience and a unique platform for networking and international exchange.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s current flagship projects include a five-year partnership with Mitsuko Uchida, centered on Mozart’s piano concertos and featured in residencies at Salzburg’s Mozartwoche, London’s Southbank Centre and New York’s Carnegie Hall; Mozart Momentum 1785/1786, a performing and recording project with Leif Ove Ansdnes – the MCO’s first Artistic Partner – examining two remarkable years of Mozart’s life; and an exploration of musical styles and concert formats with Pekka Kuusisto. A focus on symphonic repertoire characterizes the MCO’s longstanding collaboration with conductor Daniele Gatti. After its celebrated premiere of Written on Skin at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2012 under the baton of composer George Benjamin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra continues to regularly bring his works to stages around the world.

Critical superlatives and audience ovations have continuously followed Yuja Wang’s dazzling career. The Beijing-born pianist, celebrated for her charismatic artistry and captivating stage presence is set to achieve new heights during the 2019/20 season, which features recitals, concert series, as well as season residencies, and extensive tours with some of the world’s most venerated ensembles and conductors.
Season highlights include Yuja’s year-long “Artist Spotlight” at the Barbican Centre, where she curates and performs in four distinct events: the first London performance of John Adams’ newest piano concerto (premiered by her in spring 2019) titled Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes? with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel, which they took to Boston and New York City; recitals featuring cellist Gautier Capuçon and clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer; and she concludes the residency with a solo recital.
In autumn of 2019, she toured China with the Vienna Philharmonic, presenting concerts in Macao, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Wuhan. The beginning of 2020 sees Yuja and Gautier Capuçon reuniting for a recital tour featuring 11 dates presented in Europe’s premier venues, including the Philharmonie de Paris and the Wiener Konzerthaus. She then embarks on an extensive solo recital tour, appearing in renowned concert halls throughout North America and Europe, including Carnegie Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, and the Het Concertgebouw, running from February to April.
Additionally, Yuja is the featured soloist with some of the leading orchestras of North America, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Andris Nelsons; the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Gimeno; the San Francisco Symphony, led by Michael Tilson Thomas; and the Philadelphia Orchestra, under the musical direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Yuja received advanced training in Canada and at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music under Gary Graffman. Her international breakthrough came in 2007 when she replaced Martha Argerich as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She later signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has since established her place among the world’s leading artists, with a succession of critically acclaimed performances and recordings.
Yuja was named Musical America’s Artist of the Year in 2017.

In her first year as Associate Artist of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the intense and virtuoso Chinese pianist Yuja Wang returns to Gulbenkian Music to play and conduct works by Stravinsky, Ravel and Tsfasman. After winning over the critics with her interpretations of Ravel’s music, Wang is once again giving herself over to one of her favourite composers, to whom she lends her enormous charisma. Following on from its success with Mitsuko Uchida in 2023, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is once again being led by an exceptional pianist.
