Recorded in 2010 by Thomas Hampson, Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn received high praise from critics, but took its time to be brought to the concert platform. For the first time in concert, the repertoire tackled by Hampson in a format close to chamber music with the Wiener Virtuosen (an ensemble comprising members of the Vienna Philharmonic) will be presented in the Grand Auditorium, a venue the singer knows well, although this will be his debut here as a conductor. Hampson says about the repertoire that “our lives would be infinitely less rich and knowledgeable if we didn’t have this book of poems”.
