The Strangest Sea*

* World premiere – Commissioned by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Total approximate duration: 120 min

After presenting in 2026 one of the year’s great operatic events – Morning Star, based on Karl Ove Knausgård’s novel of the same name – Sebastian Fagerlund now unveils the world premiere of The Strangest Sea, a commission from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Finnish composer is today regarded as one of the most important of his generation, with BBC Music Magazine describing his work as a demonstration of ‘limitless technical resources in the service of a remarkable imagination’. The programme will also include Shostakovich’s final symphony, completed in 1971.
