In the opening concert of the Music Season in São Roque, the Gulbenkian Choir, under the baton of Jorge Matta, will sing Rachmaninov’s Vespers, op. 37, a monumental a cappella work that Gramophone magazine has described as “the last great crowning achievement of Russian Orthodox choral music, a masterpiece from a composer at the peak of his creative powers.” The Vespers was composed in less than two weeks, in 1915, after Rachmaninov made a year long tour in support of Russian troops involved in World War I.
