— Intermission of 20 min —

Igor Stravinsky

Petrouchka (1947)
Total approximate duration: 120 min

Violinist Elina Vähälä is, in the words of the Chicago Tribune, ‘a fluid, elegant and gifted performer whose brilliant technique is matched by an abundance of inspiration, sensitivity and imagination’. These qualities have frequently led to her being chosen to premiere violin concertos by contemporary composers, as was the case with Olli Mustonen’s Violin Concerto No. 2, conceived as a musical portrait of Larin Paraske, a pivotal figure in Finnish culture. The programme also includes the orchestral version of Petrouchka, the work Stravinsky created for the Ballets Russes.
