In 1936, composer Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to create a work for young audiences that would introduce the instruments of an orchestra. Prokofiev set about finding the ideal story to showcase these elements, reworking a tale by Antonina Sakonskaya, a popular children’s author, to craft the narrative that would best serve the music.
Since its premiere at the Moscow Conservatory, Peter and the Wolf has become one of the most widely performed works in the concert repertoire, in no small part because it succeeded so thoroughly in its goal of bringing young audiences closer to classical music.
