The Swedish baritone Peter Mattei is a firm believer in instinct. While he values preparation for any operatic role, analysing the characters and exploring their dramatic qualities, he always tries to stop when he realises that an excess of information or theory might overshadow his options dictated by instinct. Aware that only an unwavering technical confidence can allow emotion to overtake his singing, he once told the New York Times that he had in the boxer Muhammad Ali – and in the quote «I will float like a butterfly and sting like a bee» – one of his role models.
