Hailed as a pianist of “dazzling technique, exceptionally secure, balanced and beautifully articulated” (The Guardian), it quickly became clear that the Russian Nikolai Lugansky was a musician of unusual quality and with a unique personality. He was brought up in a house where music abounded, where it became urgent to acquire a piano to accompany his dizzying development. In an interview with Kate Molleson, he recalled that, as a child, he spent the time “lying in bed reading sonatas by Beethoven”, a composer who fills the programme for these concerts, under the sure baton of Nuno Coelho.
