Location
Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationAfter studying the Haydn string quartets, which set a new high standard for composing for this type of ensemble, Mozart followed suit in Vienna by writing six quartets between 1782 and 1785, which he dedicated to Haydn. Integrating ideas gathered during his in-depth study of other people’s work, Mozart’s unmistakable show of reverence to the master was to strengthen the just recognition of Haydn’s pieces as an undisputed reference of canonical quality. It is these six quartets that Casals, a recurring visitor to Gulbenkian, offers.
