Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationMonteverdi was a composer of unfettered creativity who brought about a new era in music. While preparing the way for the Baroque and the development of opera, integrating text into choral pieces with remarkable depth, the publication in 1610 of Vespro della Beata Vergine set a whole new level of ambition in sacred music. Demonstrating the most varied uses of the word in a musical context, the work remains an unparalleled example of artistic invention. Monteverdi is one of the composers inspiring the ensemble Les Cornets Noirs, comprising young European musicians.
