One of the most fascinating performers of our time, the pianist Mitsuko Uchida has been a regular presence in the Gulbenkian Music seasons. Famous for her absolute accuracy and unsurpassed dedication, Uchida devotes her time to the studio (close to home and with restricted access) surrounded by four pianos – on which she bestows almost human personalities – playing as if the world was limited to her and the music she plays. “My fingers never get tired,” she told The Guardian. Uchida’s Schumann, wrote the BBC’s Music Magazine, “is a mercurial panoply of delights, abounding with wit, intelligence and intuition”.
