Lully and Charpentier

During the Baroque period, military victories were greeted with fanfares, commemorated with solemn liturgies and celebrated in balls and operas. But in a century stained by the blood of so many battles, composers and poets felt that it was more important to build Peace than to celebrate Victory. In 1685, Lully and Charpentier wrote two small masterpieces (Musical Idylls) which, in addition to celebrating the successes of Louis XIV, sing above all of Peace as an indispensable gift to the flourishing of the Arts and the construction of Civilisation. After 333 years, this is a message that remains both current and crucial.
