Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationÉdouard Lalo was already 50 years old when luck finally smiled on him. After decades of neglect by the Parisian music scene, he was inspired by the Spanish virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate in 1874, to write his Violin Concerto in F minor and the Spanish Symphony, the two works that brought him out of anonymity and oblivion. Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane was also written with a specific violinist in mind, Yelly d’Aranyi, and the composer even researched the artist’s Hungarian origins to guide his creativity.
