Open-Air Amphitheatre Gulbenkian GardenIn order to raise public awareness about the conditions of women on the African continent and in defence of their rights, in late 2015, a group of singers and instrumentalists decided to set up Les Amazones D’Afrique, the first band from Mali composed exclusively of women. Mamani Keita, Kandia Kouyate, Mariam Doumbia (from the duo Amadou & Mariam, who packed out the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium in 2012), Pamela Badjogo and Mariam Kone feature among some of the most emblematic of Mali musicians that are now teamed up to denounce violence against women and combat the silence, the greatest accomplice of this global “epidemic”.
