It should almost suffice to name the five members of The Fictive Five to commend this music: Ken Filiano, Pascal Niggenkemper, Nate Wooley, Harris Eisenstadt and, in the lead, Larry Ochs. Inspired by the works of visual artist William Kentridge and film-makers Wim Wenders and Kelly Reichardt, Ochs commands a series of musical tableaux, as if he were searching for a rapport with images which, albeit unknown to the audience, reveal a potential for creating a whole sequence of impressive imaginary landscapes. As the saxophonist says, “if you’re looking to understand music, one is approaching it the wrong way.”
