The travels of Francisco Xavier captivated the historic and musical curiosity of Jordi Savall, flowing into a project inspired by the “epic journey” from Portugal to Japan, in the company of Portuguese missionaries. With admitted admiration for the spiritual and human dimension of a man who, in the sixteenth century, travelled 100 thousand kilometres in less than 12 years, Savall assembled the first concert in 1996 with Spanish and Japanese musicians, retrieved after 10 years to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Francisco Xavier. That is the “Route to the Orient” now conveyed to us, with the participation of musicians from Japan, India and Afghanistan.
