The Routes of Slavery, a programme that spans more than four centuries – from 1444 to 1888 (the year of the abolition of slavery in Brazil) celebrates music as a form of resistance to colonisers, of freedom and of survival by preserving the original culture. But it also provides the space for the cross between European and indigenous music, between colonisers and the colonised, creating a revealing palette of musical miscegenation.
