The kind of big band that seems to be the product of dreams rather than being anchored in reality. Unusually, however, this is a big band that does not come about when its members already enjoy well-established careers. It started in 1987, when Chris Speed, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jim Black and Andrew D’Angelo were still students and, despite intermittent performances, it survived the rise of each individual member to star status in contemporary jazz in their own right. After a long absence, they are back in 2016 with Party Favor, keeping their wild mix of offmainstream rock, free jazz and chamber music intact.
