The Highsmith project emerged as a duo in December 2016 in the mythical Village Vanguard, when Craig Taborn’s piano joined Ikue Mori’s electronics for the first time. The pertinence of the narrative generated that night was so surprising that they recorded their collaboration in the studio two months later, based on a free improvisation that does not flow into an exchange of notes and sounds in feverish dialogue. On the contrary, there’s an attentive listening and a search for beauty, more or less elusive, that rejects easy solutions. The expansion to a trio with the addition of a drummer as meticulous as Jim Black heralds a magical night.
