Since 2013, the Hagen Quartet has played on the famous instruments built by Antonio Stradivari, commonly known as “Paganini” (they were bought and played by the virtuoso Niccolò Paganini in the 19th century). Set up in 1981 by four Austrian brothers, with only one change to the original quartet, the Hagen asserted its characteristic style when it won a series of chamber music competitions and developed closed ties to composer György Kurtág and musicians Mitsuko Uchida, Sabine Meyer and Maurizio Pollini.
