El Sistema Residency

Gustavo Dudamel’s interpretation of Olivier Messiaen’s symphony, Turangalîla, in which the French composer set out to create a monumental, extraordinary love song infected by his fascination with the mysticism and sounds of nature, marks a great moment in El Sistema residency at Gulbenkian Music. Making use of a wide orchestral palette, which includes the intriguing waves of the Martenot (one of the first electronic instruments), Messiaen created an exuberant work, entirely consistent with the style of direction popularised by Dudamel.
