«In my life, there are always moments when I find limits to things,» the Italian conductor Claudio Abbado told The Guardian in 2007. In 1986, when the European Union Youth Orchestra refused to open auditions to Eastern European countries, whose musicians had made their desire to join his orchestra clear, Abbado created the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. One of this orchestra’s most highly-regarded recordings is its interpretation of Ligeti’s Atmosphères, conducted by David Afkham, the current musical director of the National Orchestra of Spain.
