From the Middle Ages to the present day, Luz e Sombras (“Light and Shadows”) is a dialogue between styles, through the works of European and American composers. From Gregorian chant to accompanied melody, from polyphony to antiphonal music, through charismatic works by Giuseppe Verdi, Gustav Holst and Johannes Brahms, this program covers several centuries of music, emphasizing the eclectic nature of the female voice. Completing this mosaic is Sarah Quartel’s Sanctum, a set of pieces inspired by Vancouver Island’s landscapes, explored as a form of healing, and seeking peace.
