Gulbenkian Choir
Coro Gulbenkian was founded in 1964 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as a full symphonic body of around 100 singers. The choir joins the Orquestra Gulbenkian and other orchestras to perform Classical, Romantic and Contemporary choral-symphonic repertoire, but can also perform a cappella. It has performed – and often premiered – many 20th century works by Portuguese and international composers.
Coro Gulbenkian has been invited to collaborate with major international orchestras, under the direction of conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Colin Davis, John Nelson, Emmanuel Krivine, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Frans Brüggen, Franz Welser-Möst, Gerd Albrecht, Michael Gielen, Michael Tilson Thomas, Rafael Frübeck de Burgos, René Jacobs and Leonard Slatkin, among others.
Besides its regular season of concerts in Lisbon and frequent national tours, Coro Gulbenkian has repeatedly toured Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macao, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Uruguay.
Coro Gulbenkian has recorded extensively for Philips, Deutsche Grammophon, Erato, Cascavelle, Musifrance, as well as FNAC-Music, performing a wide range of repertoire, from Early-Renaissance polyphony to Xenakis. Several of these albums received international awards.
Michel Corboz was the Principal Conductor between 1969 and 2019. Jorge Matta and Inês Tavares Lopes are currently the Associate and Assistant conductors, respectively.

Martina Batič
Principal Conductor
Martina Batič is one of the leading choir directors of her generation. As the winner of the renowned Eric Ericson Competition 2006, she is celebrated for her particular versatility in conducting a broad choral repertoire from chamber music to symphony.
Martina Batič has been Principal Conductor of the Chœur de Radio France from 2018-2022. Before that, she held the position of Artistic Director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Choir. From 2004-2009, Martina Batič was Artistic Director of the Choir of the Slovenian National Opera in Ljubljana. In season 2023/24 she is taking the Chief Conductor position of Danish National Vocal Ensemble in Copenhagen.
The Slovenian is a sought-after guest conductor and has been on podium of the RIAS Chamber Choir, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, MDR Rundfunkchor, SWR Vokalensemble, Chorwerk Ruhr, as well as the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, Swedish Radio Choir, Danish National Vocal Ensemble, The Norwegian Soloists' Choir, Suomen Laulu Choir & Finnish Baroque Orchestra, Nederlands Kamerkoor, Netherlands Radio Choir, Flemish Radio Choir, Gulbenkian Choir and others.Future highlights include her return visits to Nederlands Kamerkoor, Netherlands Radio Choir, Gulbenkian Orchestra & Choir and engagements with Flemish Radio Choir, SWR Vokalensemble, Coro Casa da Musica Porto, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Zürcher Sing-Akademie, Helsinki Chamber Choir, Bachchor Salzburg among others.
Martina Batič has conducted A cappella concerts at festivals such as Baltic Sea Stockholm, Ultima Oslo, Choregies d’Orange, Montpellier, Saint-Denis and Présences Paris. In 2018 she conducted the Swedish Radio Choir & Eric Ericson Chamber Choir in a gala concert on the occasion of Eric Ericson's 100th birthday.
Martina Batič obtained her Bachelor of Music from the Music Academy of the University of Ljubljana in 2002. She continued her studies at the University of Music and Theater in Munich in the class of Prof. Michael Gläser, where she completed her master's degree in choral conducting with distinction in 2004. She attended master classes across Europe and worked with renowned choral conductors such as Eric Ericson.
In 2019 Martina Batič received the Slovenian national prize “Prešeren Fund Awards” for her artistic achievements in the field of choral conducting. -
Pedro Massarrão

Pedro Massarrão começou a estudar violoncelo aos cinco anos de idade. Em 2016 completou os seus primeiros estudos, com Luís Sá Pessoa, na Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional. Obteve o grau de licenciado, com Paulo Gaio Lima, na Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, em junho de 2019. Conclui o mestrado, com Jeroen den Herder, na Codarts Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, em Roterdão, em junho de 2021. Em 2017 integrou o agrupamento laureado do Prémio Jovens Músicos. Foi bolseiro Gulbenkian.
Na área da interpretação histórica, é membro fundador do ensemble Altos do Bairro, diretor artístico do Concerto 1755 e colabora com grupos como Avres Serva, América Antiga ou Os Músicos do Tejo. Apresentou-se em salas como a Casa da Música, o Centro Cultural de Belém, a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian ou o De Doelen (Roterdão) e em diversos festivais como o Festival Internacional de Música da Costa do Estoril, o Festival Internacional de Música de Marvão, os “Dias da Música” (Lisboa), o Festival Internacional de Violoncelo de Zutphen (Países Baixos), o Festival Internacional de Música da Póvoa de Varzim ou o Festival Arte nas Adegas.

Carlos Leite
Trumpet
Carlos Leite was born in Cabeceiras de Basto. At the age of eleven he joined Vasco Faria's trumpet class at the Escola Profissional Artística do Vale do Ave. He later studied with Eliseu Correia and completed his studies at Artave in 2011. He then enrolled in the Escola Superior de Música e Artes e do Espetáculo, in Kevin Wauldron's class. He was awarded the 1st Prize in several national competitions, including the Wind Instruments Competition "Terras de La Salette", the Póvoa de Varzim Trumpet Competition and the Luso-Galaico Albertino Lucas Competition. He also participated in the 26th edition of the Young Musicians Award, winning the 3rd Prize - Top Level. In the same year, he won the scholarship for the 38th Annual Conference of the International Trumpet Guild in Michigan, Chicago. In 2014 he was approved for the Erasmus program, at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, and entered Angel Serrano's trumpet class. Between 2014 and 2018, he was a full member of the European Union Youth Orchestra. He has attended master classes by Hakan Hardenberger, Michael Sachs, Mireia Farrés, Frits Damrow and Pierre Dutot, among others. In 2015 he finished his degree in Trumpet Music - with a perfect score of 20 out of 20 in Trumpet. He was a guest teacher at the 23rd and 24th Technical-Interpretative Improvement Courses of the Music Conservatory of Paredes, 2nd Junior BSP (Portuguese Symphonic Band) Festival. In 2017 he was awarded the 1st prize in the 26th Lions European Music Competition in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2017 and 2018, he taught trumpet at the Academia de Música Costa Cabral and Escola Superior de Música e Artes e do Espetáculo. In addition to the 1st reinforcement in the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra, Carlos Leite collaborates with the Barcelona and National Symphony Orchestra of Catalonia and the Portuguese Symphonic Band. He recently won the Gulbenkian Orchestra's audition for Soloist A.

José Pedro Pereira
Trumpet
José Pedro Pereira was born in 1998. He is trumpet B soloist at the Gulbenkian Orchestra. He initiated his piano and trumpet studies at the Conservatório de Música de Felgueiras, later continuing his training at the Academia José Atalaya in Fafe. In 2010, he enrolled at the Escola Profissional Artística do Vale do Ave where he studied under Paulo Silva and graduated with top marks. In 2016, he was admitted into the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste – Zurich, where he studied under Frits Damrow and Laurent Tinguely and also, for Baroque trumpet, under Simon Lilly.
During his training, he took countless advanced courses with Pierre Dutot, Frits Damrow, Mark David, Pasi Pirinen, Philippe Litzler, Pacho Flores, Konradin Groth, Reinhold Friedrich, Jeroen Berwaerts, Philip Smith and Sergei Nakariakov, among others.
He has won awards in Portuguese and international competitions, including the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition (France), Internationaler Bodensee Musikwettbewerb (Germany), “Terras de La Salette” Wind Instruments International Competition, Póvoa de Varzim Trumpet Competition, Rubén Simeó International Trumpet Competition and the Albertino Lucas Luso-Galician Competition. In 2018, he won 1st Prize (advanced level) at the 32nd Young Musicians Awards.
He was a student musician at the Opernaus Zürich / Philharmonia Zürich (2019–2022), where he worked with innumerable internationally renowned conductors and singers. In the role of soloist, he has played for the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orchestre de l‘Opéra de Rouen Normandie, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim and the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa.

Rui Fernandes
Trombone
Rui Fernandes was born in Lanhelas, Caminha. He began his musical studies at the age of eight in the Banda Musical Lanhelense. He later studied with José Borges at the Escola Profissional de Música de Viana do Castelo. At 18, he continued his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa with Ismael Santos and, at 23, he joined the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied with Chris Houlding. Throughout his education, he also attended courses with the most prestigious trombonists worldwide, such as Josep Alessi, Ian Bousfield, Don Lucas, Gusztav Hona and David Bruchez, amongst others.
Rui Fernandes has played with several chamber music groups and performed solo with the Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras at the Estoril Music Festival. He has also played with the principal Portuguese orchestras, including the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto, the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, playing with prestigious conductors and soloists. As a teacher, he has taught trombone at the Alhandra and Minde Music Schools. From 2008 to 2010, he was trombonist with the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música. He has been 2nd trombone soloist of the Gulbenkian Orchestra since 2010. He is also currently a member of the trombone and tuba group, Wild Bones Gang.

Sergi Miñana
Trombone
Sergi Miñana was born in Gandia, Spain. He began studying music at the age of nine, finishing his higher studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música de Castelló Salvador Seguí in 2010. In 2008, he worked with professors Ximo Vicedo, Ian Bousfield, Stefan Schulz, Ricardo Casero, Nury Guarnaschelli, Rudolf Korp, Otmar Gaiswinkler and Erik Hainzl at the Brass Academy Alicante.
He collaborated with the academy’s ensemble, performing nationally and abroad. In 2011, he was awarded the 3rd prize in the Villa de Castellnovo Young Performers Contest (A category). He received 2nd prize in the National Competition of Young Performers Ciutat de Xátiva (A modality) in 2012 and 2014.
From 2010 to 2018, he taught trombone in different Professional Music Conservatories in Valencia Province. He collaborated also with orchestras like Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra and Choir of the RTVE, Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona, Orquesta de Cadaqués, Orchestra of the Valencian Community (Palau de les Arts), Malaga Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Valencia, Youth Symphony Orchestra of Castellón, National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia, Barcelona Filharmonia and Aragón Symphony Orchestra. He worked with conductors like Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Pablo Heras Casado, Daniele Gatti, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jesús López Cobos, Gustavo Gimeno and Isaac Karabtchevsky. He was member of Quintet de Metalls Al Vent (2014-2018), performing in concerts throughout the Spanish territory.
He is 1st Trombone Soloist of the Gulbenkian Orchestra since 2018.

In one of her previous inspirational visits to the Grand Auditorium, the new Principal Conductor of the Gulbenkian Choir, Martina Batič, demonstrated her desire to deepen her knowledge of Portuguese music, conducting a programme including compositions by Lopes-Graça and Eurico Carrapatoso. This time, Batič goes further back in time: she looks at works by Carlos Seixas and Francisco António de Almeida, luminaries of Portuguese Baroque music, as well as foreign composers who, in the same period, were prominent in Portugal – with Domenico Scarlatti in the spotlight.
