Long devoted exclusively to his solo performances, favouring his deep relationship with the piano, Grigory Sokolov also developed a particular interest in piano mechanics and the idiosyncrasies of each individual instrument. While perfecting a new programme, the musician consults with piano technicians, working on every detail of his performance. “You need hours to understand the piano” he says, “because each one has its own personality and we play together.”
