Despite an extensive, rich body of work, Satie’s popularity would come to lie on his Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes. Gymnopédie no. 1, in particular, has demonstrated its ability to penetrate popular culture that has made it a piece that is easily recognisable by the general public, and regularly heard in film scores. John Cage referred to Erik Satie saying: “It’s not a question of relevance – Satie is indispensable.” A highlight of these two concerts is the return to the Grand Auditorium of the cellist Gautier Capuçon, as soloist in the demanding Cello Concerto No. 1 by Saint-Saëns.
